"I think life doesn't need to be taken so seriously, therefore, laughter, hugs, food, and poems are always welcome."
The resources of the visual arts help us explore and integrate our inner world. Diving into James Hillman's theory of images, our sessions continually focus on this dynamic relationship, seeking to understand what these images offer to our personal growth. We also discuss dreams, memories, and spontaneous daytime images, approaching each "as if" it were a metaphor, opening new perspectives for reflection and transformation.
Working with music and poetry in therapy plays an important role in our feelings and perceptions. The sounds we grew up hearing, voices of family and friends; songs we listen to that we like or dislike, all reveal something about us and can be brought to the session.
Playing with collage represents a process of self-rediscovery. In this field, we select an already settled image and then select what we can use from it to create a new piece. We can experience this process as a destruction of what is already set in ourselves, such as traditions, vicious behaviors, bonds, analyzing what is actually there, and then a reconstruction through an understanding of who we genuinely are. Noticing is where the process of integration and acceptance begins.
We are all currently photographing for documentation purposes, fun, or enthusiastically saving little pieces of our reality. Expressing ourselves through photos can be incredibly diverse, ranging from family photographs that can provide an overview of personal development to current production—that is, photos captured every day by ourselves. In therapy, it can provide multi-artistic work and at the same time bear various ways to understand our psychodynamics.
Our physical body significantly contributes to therapy, as it is inseparable from our psyche. It might seem evident, but the reality is that our day-to-day interactions have led to this outcome. Frequently, the body speaks and shows psychodynamic images, and it is important to be attentive when listening to its voice. Theoretically based and practically applied, body expression in therapy can bring out our emotions and memories, offering a brand-new way of dealing with our inner processes.
The sessions in art therapy help us to go deep into our inner subjects, and the art resources are great allies to deal with them in a creative way. This means that different issues can be also treated and approached in a different way than through speech sessions only. The body speaks in very different ways; the material makes it easier and smoother.
Art is a natural way of expressing ourselves, and art therapy follows the same path. Therefore, art therapy is for everyone who wants to express themselves and develop personally.
Through art, we can express ourselves creatively according to our inner selves' needs and promote healthy psychological development. Also, we can work on personality, eating, and mood disorders.
